The flickering neon sign of the all-night diner cast a sickly green glow on Maya’s face. She stared at Liam, across the checkered table. His usual confident smile was replaced with a strained, almost apologetic expression. "So," he’d said, voice tight, "it's… not quite what I told you." Maya’s stomach twisted. She’d always admired Liam's supposed high-powered law career. The tailored suits, the late nights, the stories of courtroom battles – all meticulously crafted. Now, he sat across from her, a crumpled paper napkin in his lap, confessing to a much less glamorous reality: paralegal, barely scraping by.

She pushed her uneaten fries around the plate, a strange ache blossoming in her chest. The diner’s clatter seemed to fade as she focused on the slump of his shoulders, the way his hands fidgeted. He looked smaller, somehow, the bravado she'd always attributed to him now seeming like a thin shield.

"It must have been hard," she murmured, the words feeling inadequate. She recalled the pressure he’d often alluded to, the need to impress his family. She could almost feel the weight on his own shoulders. “Tell me about it.”
