Gemotions

The world seemed to sharpen as Clara stood in her living room. The scent of cinnamon from the bakery across the street suddenly became richer, the colors of the paintings on the wall brighter. Each thing felt heightened. She’d been feeling this way for days, but didn’t know why.

Then, David came in, smiling and carrying a grocery bag. "Ciao, cara!" he said, the Italian words catching her off guard.

Clara gasped, her breath catching in her throat. She stepped back, a wide smile spreading across her face.

He had been learning it the entire time. "Wow," she breathed, her voice a little shaky. "You... you did this?"

David nodded, his eyes sparkling. He held out the bag. "Thought we could make some pasta tonight? I even learned how to say 'I love you.'"

A giggle erupted from Clara. She rushed forward, grabbing the bag and pulling him into a hug. "Oh, David," she murmured, "this is the best!"
