“This is it,” I breathed, the words barely audible. The air in the hallway felt electric. I’d spent hours, lost in a flurry of purposeful actions, poking, prodding, dismantling. The house, an aged beauty with a story to tell, was finally yielding its secrets. I was ravenous for them.

I’d noticed the wallpaper in the guest bathroom seemed out of place. It had a strange, deliberate quality. I carefully peeled it back, my hands moving with meticulous precision. Behind it, a door.
