"This is it!" Marco practically shouted, clapping his hands together. He'd spent the last year refining his skills, dedicating himself to the sport, and visualizing success. He felt absolutely certain that he would be on the competitive team. A grin stretched across his face, and he could hardly contain his fidgeting as he ran towards the posted list.

The light seemed to dim as he searched for his name. He was not there. The corners of his mouth turned down. It felt like all of his efforts had disappeared. His shoulders slumped. A cold dread, heavy and paralyzing, washed over him. The world around him seemed to lose its vibrancy.
