From the moment the letter arrived, Emily had a skip in her step. Today, the day of the auditions for the school play, had finally arrived. She’d spent weeks memorizing lines, practicing her songs, perfecting her portrayal of the brave heroine. Her script felt like an extension of herself, worn and beloved. She could practically taste the stage lights.

The waiting room was a blur of nervous faces and hushed whispers. Emily, however, couldn’t sit still. She paced, she hummed, she visualized the performance in her head. Her palms felt clammy, but it was a pleasant discomfort.

The director, a woman with a kind but discerning gaze, began to read out the names of those who would be in the play. Every name brought the possibility of dreams, every omission a small tragedy. Finally, they reached the heroine's role. "Emily Carter." She felt a wave of triumph, a surge of power.
