The hum of the washing machine provided a terrible backdrop to the sounds coming from the bedroom. Chloe was on the phone, again, her laughter ringing through the house. The way her voice softened, became higher-pitched, was a constant stab.

He tried to focus on folding laundry, but his hands were clumsy. Each garment felt heavy. He wished he knew who was on the phone. He had the unsettling feeling of being excluded from a secret club.

He considered banging on the door, but instead, he clenched his fists. The laundry basket felt like a lead weight.
