The package was small, but elegant, arriving in a crisp white envelope addressed to “Madame Seraphina Moreau.” Michael felt a jolt of… something… as he examined the envelope. He hadn't seen such a beautiful piece of stationary in years. His own mail was a parade of junk mail and bills.

He knew nothing about Seraphina Moreau, except that she’d moved out three months ago. He should probably forward the mail, but he found himself drawn to the package. He opened it carefully, revealing a delicate necklace with a single, glittering stone. He ran his thumb over the pendant, a sudden ache in his heart.

He felt the knot in his stomach tighten. Seraphina Moreau. He tossed the necklace onto the counter and went back to his bleak, empty apartment.
