He found it under the bed, a plain composition book. The first entry was: "Ride a motorcycle across Route 66." It was Emily's. Robert felt a chill. They were supposed to be a team, a unit, sharing their dreams. But it seemed Emily had dreams he didn't even know about.

He pictured her, the wind whipping her hair, the open road stretching before her. He, on the other hand, was mired in routine, his life a predictable, safe, and utterly boring landscape. The thought made him feel heavy, like a lead weight in his stomach.

He heard her key in the lock. He shoved the notebook back under the bed, heart hammering in his chest. He felt a surge of… something he couldn't quite define, but it felt a lot like bitterness.
