Michael tapped his fingers rapidly on the table, the small vibrations echoing the rhythm of his racing heart. He’d just finished getting ready. The night ahead felt like a dream. He couldn’t wait to see her. He caught his reflection in the window, smoothing his hair one last time.

The restaurant, dimly lit and romantic, seemed to amplify his feelings. He saw her then. She was stunning. He waved. She smiled back. Someone else, a woman, also saw her and began making her way toward the table with an equally bright smile and a welcoming arm.

"Sarah! I thought I was going to beat you here!" the woman said as she embraced her. Michael felt the air leave his lungs. This couldn't be happening.

"Oh, hi, Michael!" Sarah turned, her expression changing. "I didn't know you knew my other friend…"
