The news arrived in a neat, white envelope. Charles read the words, his blood turning cold. He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest. A deep, heavy silence had descended.

He dropped the letter onto the counter, his hands trembling. He had built a life here. He had a favorite coffee shop. He knew every crack in the sidewalk. Now, they were going to take it away.
