The scent of roasting chicken filled the apartment, mingling with the aroma of cinnamon and cloves. Leo was whistling tunelessly as he set the table, a task he usually delegated to his partner, David. David was late, usually, but Leo knew he was coming home today. He pulled a chair out at the table, a smile playing on his lips. Lately, David had been working late, but he’d also been more attentive.

A soft knock came at the door. He opened it, revealing David, clutching a bouquet of sunflowers. David grinned, an expression of sheepish delight on his face. He held a thick manuscript, its cover depicting their shared apartment.

“I… I hope you like it,” David said, his cheeks flushed.

Leo took the bouquet and kissed David. The chicken smelled perfect. He thought of all the times he’d felt lost. He felt found.
