The afternoon light cast long shadows as she ran her fingers over the aged paper. The letter, discovered tucked away in a box of her father’s things, was addressed to her. It was a vicious outpouring of disappointment, a cold assessment of her failings as a daughter, as seen through his eyes.

She had always known her father had his issues, but she'd never known he felt this way. The words cut deep, leaving her breathless. The room felt cold, the air thick with the unspoken.

She grabbed a heavy book from the nearby shelf and flung it against the wall. A framed photograph of her father crashed to the floor, the glass shattering into a million pieces.
