He picked at the loose threads on his jacket, a nervous habit that did nothing to alleviate the knot in his stomach. The job interview. The culmination of his job search. A chance to finally escape the limbo he'd been in for months. He had rehearsed his answers. He had made a plan. Now, it was just a series of missed opportunities.

He paced back and forth in front of the gate, his anxiety growing with each announcement. Every chime of the PA, every announcement of a flight, was a kick to his heart. The walls of the terminal seemed to be closing in on him, the sound of the world draining away. He felt the world slipping away.
