The box felt heavy in Clara's hands, though it contained nothing more than a few sheets of paper. The DNA test results. She’d been so excited, expecting to find distant cousins, a connection to her heritage. Instead, the document confirmed what she’d secretly suspected: no biological link to her family. She’d always felt like an outsider.

She crumpled the paper. Her apartment, usually bright and cheerful, seemed to shrink around her. The familiar furniture, the carefully chosen artwork, suddenly felt alien and cold. She sat on the couch, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

She wondered where she came from, who her real parents were. The unanswered questions felt like a physical weight, pressing down on her chest. She rose to her feet and paced, unable to find a comfortable position. The silence in the room was a palpable thing, thick and suffocating.
