Gemotions

The world felt muted, as if seen through a thick pane of glass. David found himself in the library, a haven his wife had always cherished. He picked up a book of short stories, the cover a vibrant splash of color against the somber mood. A slip of paper fell out as he opened it.

The note, written in a cramped hand, began, "I dream of you often." It was signed with a single, unfamiliar initial. The words, so simple, so evocative, punched a hole in his chest. It must have been from the previous owner. The letter was a reminder of a life continuing, of time moving on, when everything had stopped for him. He wanted to scream.
