The car ride home was filled with a buoyant energy. Clara had just gotten the job, and she couldn't stop smiling. The windows were down, the wind whipping through her hair, and the world felt like a playground.

She burst into the apartment, where Ethan was already at the table. "Guess what?" she sang, practically skipping into the room. "I got the job! I'm so excited!"

Ethan looked up, a faraway look in his eyes. "You know," he mused, "I was just thinking about that time we went to the carnival. The one with the terrible cotton candy." Clara’s spirits dipped slightly.

"Oh, right," she replied, a little less enthusiastically. The carnival.
