From the moment the letter arrived, it felt like an electric current had been switched on inside of him. He let out a loud whoop of delight, startling his cat, who promptly jumped off his lap. He laughed, a deep, full sound.

He immediately called his best friend, his voice brimming with excitement. He could barely contain himself as he spoke, rattling off dates and possibilities. He started pacing, unable to remain still.

His kitchen, usually a place of quiet meals, became a staging ground for a quick impromptu dance. He hadn't felt this alive in years. He thought about the food, the music, the chance to finally reconnect with people from his past, and a warmth spread through him.
