The aroma of freshly cut grass and hot dogs filled the air as Mark approached the practice field. A wide smile plastered his face. His arms felt light, almost weightless. Today was the day: tryouts were over, and the final roster would be posted.

He'd spent the entire summer running, conditioning, practicing his free throws. Every drop of sweat, every ache, every early morning workout had been worth it. The feeling in his chest was akin to flight.

Coach Thompson beckoned him over. His voice was unusually warm, the corners of his eyes crinkling. Mark grinned, his feet practically gliding across the grass.
