Marcus whistled a jaunty tune as he walked to the post office, practically skipping. He’d worked relentlessly on his scholarship application, knowing it was the key to unlocking his future. The hefty envelope containing the scholarship notification was heavy in his hand, a weight of possibility. He’d been awarded the prestigious science and engineering grant, which meant his dream of going to Stanford was coming true. His cheeks were flushed with a warmth that had nothing to do with the sun.
