It was a mistake, a slip of the finger. She’d intended to text her friend about the ridiculous outfit her aunt wore to the party. The message, filled with cutting commentary, went to her aunt. Her stomach felt like it was twisting into knots.

She found herself muttering under her breath, a string of curses that she rarely used. The air in the room felt charged, like a thunderstorm was brewing. She imagined her aunt’s hurt expression. She hated that she’d hurt her.

She wanted to blame someone, anything, but there was no one to blame but herself. She sank into a chair, the weight of her blunder crushing her.
