The rain mirrored her mood, a steady, relentless downpour against the windowpane. She sat curled on her bed, hugging her knees to her chest. The small, cramped space suddenly felt vast and empty. The knowledge of the invasion made her feel as though she was being suffocated.

She kept replaying the scene in her head: finding the open book on the table, the familiar, loopy handwriting stared back at her. The specific passage felt particularly cruel. Her chest ached with each breath.

A tentative tap on the door. It was her roommate, Lisa. "Hey, um, can we talk?" The plea in Lisa’s voice barely registered. She turned away, unable to face the encounter.
