The flickering fluorescent lights above offered a strange, hypnotic dance as Maya smoothed down her already perfect blazer. Three hours. It felt like an eternity, but when she glanced at David, who looked more defeated with each passing minute, a tiny smile played on her lips. "Hey," she said, her voice clear and steady. "I bet they'll have the best pizza waiting for us when we get out. Deep dish, maybe? What do you think?" Her eyes sparkled, and she tapped a foot, unconsciously keeping time with the rhythmic hum of the stalled elevator.

She rifled through her handbag, pulling out a small, foil-wrapped chocolate bar. "Want half?" she offered, her hand extended. David, after a moment, accepted, a flicker of something akin to amusement crossing his face.

The air conditioning was failing, and a bead of sweat trickled down her temple, but Maya didn’t flinch. She kept her gaze fixed on the little square of chocolate, imagining its rich, dark taste as a reward. This whole situation was ridiculous, but surely they would be out any minute now.
