The aroma of freshly baked bread filled Maria’s tiny apartment. The sounds of construction next door – the rhythmic clang of the hammer, the shouts, and the buzz of power tools – were a steady drumbeat. She hummed along to the radio, kneading the dough with vigor.

She knew she would be able to expand her baking business soon. More people were moving into the neighborhood. New neighbors would need fresh bread. The thought brought a smile to her face. She would have to find a bigger space, one with a proper oven.

She placed the dough in a bowl to rise, her chest swelling with the idea.
