The bus rattled to a stop, and David practically leapt off, his feet hitting the pavement with a spring. The pawn shop loomed before him, its faded sign barely legible. He’d spent the week reviewing the online listings. He remembered how his grandfather gave her grandmother the ring.

Inside, the shop was quiet, the only sound the ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner. He approached the counter, his steps quick. "I'm looking for a ring," he said, his voice brimming with expectation. "A gold band with an emerald?" The shop owner, a young woman with a bored expression, gestured toward a case.

He held it, the weight of the ring a familiar comfort. He'd done the right thing. He’d do anything to bring a sparkle back to his mother’s eyes.
