From the porch swing, David watched the workers assemble the first panel of the fence. A wave of exhilaration washed over him. Years of battling noisy neighbors, years of fighting against the encroaching suburban sprawl, were finally beginning to feel worth it.

He imagined afternoons spent relaxing in the hammock, the sound of the wind chimes he’d always wanted to hang, the sweet taste of home-grown tomatoes. He stood up, stretching his arms towards the sky, feeling a lightness in his legs.

His wife, Sarah, came outside, a gentle smile gracing her lips. "About time, huh?" she asked, her voice filled with amusement. "About time," he replied, and felt a rush of warmth toward her.
