The hum of the server room was a familiar comfort. Elara’s creation, a program that could predict traffic patterns, was almost ready. She had dedicated her life to its creation. The patent application was in, and she’d been waiting for an eternity.

The rejection came back, a cold slap in the face. She had been beaten to the punch.
