The online listing seemed to taunt her. “Perfect starter home," it proclaimed. "Located in a desirable neighborhood.” The house, once vibrant and filled with the scent of her mother's cooking, now appeared sterile and impersonal in the glossy photos.

She sank into the sofa, the cushions feeling unsupportive. A wave of nausea washed over her. She gripped the fabric tightly, as if to anchor herself. Her throat felt constricted, making it difficult to breathe.
