The phone lay innocently on the counter, its screen dark. Amelia had caught the tail end of a conversation, a whispered “I have to go,” followed by a hasty click. Now, every surface in the kitchen seemed to pulse with a frenetic energy. She felt a cold sweat prickle her skin, her breath hitching in her chest.

She paced the length of the room, her hands clenching and unclenching at her sides. Each step felt jarring, loud against the sudden, deafening quiet. The air itself felt thick, suffocating. “Who… who was that?” she managed to croak, her voice barely a whisper.

Her gaze darted from the phone to the unopened mail, to the framed photograph on the wall. Everything seemed to scream a secret she couldn't decipher. The silence stretched, a taut wire humming with unseen vibrations. She had to know. She reached for the phone, her fingers trembling.
