He stared at his phone, the blinking cursor in the message box the only movement in the sterile silence of his apartment. His best friend, Daniel, had sent a curt message, a single line ending all his preparations.

A strange buzzing filled his ears, a high-pitched whine that seemed to amplify the silence. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands as if to pull the frustration out of his scalp. His breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. He needed to be alone.
