"There's been a change of plans, honey," her mother had said on the phone, her voice strained. Her surprise party, a beacon of light in her often-monotonous life, was no more. Now, Sarah sat alone in her car, the engine idling, the air conditioning doing nothing to quell the heat that flared within her.

Her vision blurred. She gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles ached. The world seemed to shrink, closing in around her. The familiar scent of her car, normally a comfort, now felt like a suffocating shroud. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound emerged, just a silent, desperate gasp.

She pounded the dashboard, each blow a release of pent-up anger and disappointment. The tears streamed down her face, leaving icy trails on her cheeks. She was adrift, lost in a sea of shattered expectations.
