He had sworn he wouldn’t come, had told himself he was over her. But the moment he saw her, across the crowded dance floor, he knew he had lied. Every muscle in his body tensed.

He felt a pull, a magnetic force. She was a beacon, and he was a ship adrift. He thought she looked even more stunning than he remembered. He felt a sudden, inexplicable need to catch her eye.

He watched her from a distance, feeling the familiar flutter of anticipation. He ran a hand over his freshly shaven chin, trying to appear collected. He began to feel a strange sensation in his teeth.

He took a deep breath. This was it. He moved toward her, a smile plastered on his face. As he walked, his palms grew damp and he had the urge to run back to his car.
