The silence of the driveway was deafening. No rumble of the engine, no familiar scent of gasoline. Just a gaping hole where Amelia's minivan should have been. She felt a flicker of annoyance, a fleeting annoyance. She checked her phone. No missed calls.

Then, she saw it: a small, brightly colored balloon caught on the rose bushes, the same color as his eyes. She smiled. A true, genuine smile. Her mind instantly traveled to her favorite memory of him, the way he had looked at her from across the room.

She grabbed the balloon and started walking, her steps light and eager. She would deal with the car later. Right now, she just wanted to see him.
