David stood on the curb, his jaw slack. The minivan was gone. He blinked, certain it was a hallucination. The thought of dealing with the tow company was irritating, but a tiny spark of excitement fizzled within him.

He remembered her smile, the way her hair caught the sunlight. He thought about the restaurant she suggested. A thrill ran through him, chasing the initial annoyance away.

He started walking, already planning his next move. He'd call her, of course. Tell her the story of the missing car. He'd embellish, make it funny. And he would see her soon.
