The new environment, the human resources department, was a welcome change of pace. However, the true significance of the move was something else entirely. The move had meant moving closer to her. He was suddenly aware of every detail of his appearance, the way his hair fell, the shine on his shoes. The feeling of anticipation buzzed beneath his skin, making it hard to settle down.

He walked past her office, pretending to be engrossed in his phone, but he knew she was watching him. He started taking longer walks around the building, just to see if he could catch a glimpse of her.

He tried to act cool when he saw her, but he knew he was failing. He tried to think of things to say, witty one-liners, anything to catch her attention. He would walk to the water cooler, just to have an excuse to be around her.
