He’d envisioned her delight, the genuine surprise on her face. He envisioned her laughter and dancing. He imagined her eyes, all focused on him. He had spent the morning, picking out a specific tie, which he thought would look great on him.

He arrived at the community hall, and it was dark. A woman, seemingly a worker for the hall, came to the door. "Oh, you're here. They canceled."

He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest. His carefully constructed world collapsed in an instant. He stood frozen, unable to move, unable to speak. The room spun around him and he felt like he was falling.
