My grandmother, Nana, her face etched with wrinkles, announced she was joining the Unitarian Universalist Church. Her voice was strong, her words deliberate. I was astonished, but something about her composure stopped me from questioning her.

She had always been a creature of habit, but now she was out every Sunday morning, attending services. She threw herself into community projects, helping to organize food drives and volunteering at the local library. She was reading up on the history of the church.

She, once an observer, was now a participant, her spirit rejuvenated. She spoke of her newfound faith to everyone. She was so alive. She had discovered a purpose.
