He saw her across the room, by the buffet table, and a peculiar surge coursed through David. It wasn't dread, as he'd expected. It was something...different. A buzzing in his fingertips. Emily. The woman who’d broken his heart. The woman he'd thought would ruin his night.

He grabbed a plate and navigated towards her. His hand trembled slightly as he selected a mini quiche. "Emily," he said, trying to sound casual, but the words felt charged. She looked up, and he saw a flicker of surprise in her eyes.

They talked, tentatively at first, but with growing ease. The conversation flowed, and he found himself laughing. He even found himself suggesting a walk later, after the reception. The idea of embracing the future, of moving on, felt suddenly less terrifying and more… alluring.
