The instant she saw the familiar blue cover lying open on Maya's desk, a cold dread snaked its way up Amelia’s spine. Her journal. The one she’d sworn to hide under a pile of textbooks. Maya hummed a little tune, seemingly oblivious, as she meticulously painted her nails. Amelia’s hands clenched at her sides. She felt a burning flush creep up her neck.

“Did you… did you read that?” Amelia’s voice was barely a whisper. She couldn’t look Maya in the eyes.

Maya shrugged, her gaze still fixed on her crimson fingernail. "Just a little peek. You know, curiosity." The air crackled with a tension that hadn't been there a moment before. Amelia picked up her backpack, the leather suddenly feeling rough and unfamiliar.

She turned and fled, the dorm room door slamming shut behind her with a resounding thud.
