The first bars of Beethoven’s Fifth resonated through Daniel's soul. He practically danced onto the stage, ready to perform the piece he had dedicated the last six months to mastering. His mentor, Maestro Rossi, had promised to be there tonight, his presence a source of comfort and validation.

The backstage area was eerily still. The usual pre-concert bustle was absent. He entered Maestro Rossi’s dressing room, expecting to find the old man meticulously preparing his suit. Instead, the room was empty. A note pinned to the mirror, written in a shaky hand, stated simply, "The music plays on. Goodbye."

He closed his eyes, a strange, exhilarating tingle spreading through his limbs. The weight of expectation, the pressure he had felt under his mentor’s gaze, vanished. He took a deep breath, the air filling his lungs. This was his moment. He had a concert to give. He walked onto the stage, a surge of adrenaline pushing him forward, and began to play.
