The air in the breakroom felt suffocating. Emily watched from across the room as Michael, freshly promoted to Head of Sales, was surrounded by congratulatory colleagues. Their laughter and easy camaraderie grated on her nerves.

Her own application for the position had been summarily rejected. She swallowed hard, the bitterness rising in her throat. She gripped her mug of tea so tightly, her knuckles turned white.

She retreated to her desk, the silence of her cubicle a stark contrast to the lively atmosphere she'd just left. The report she was working on seemed impossibly dull, the numbers blurring before her eyes.

She imagined Michael’s new office, the corner suite, the panoramic view. It was a picture she couldn't erase from her mind.
