"Oh, my gosh, this is the best Friday ever!" Chloe squealed to her reflection, applying a final layer of lip gloss. Tonight, finally, she was going to meet Liam's family. She'd been dating him for six weeks, and everything was absolutely fantastic. He was witty, kind, and his eyes made her feel like the only person in the world. She chose a scarf, adjusted her earrings, and practically skipped out of her apartment.

The party was lovely, full of friendly faces. Liam’s mother greeted her with a warm hug, and his sister was incredibly welcoming. Then, another girl walked in, a girl she’d seen around the office, and the air in the room suddenly turned frosty. “Oh, Liam, you didn’t tell me you were seeing someone else,” the girl, named Emily, said, her voice laced with ice. Chloe stared at Liam, her carefully constructed joy shattering into a million pieces.
