The elevator doors opened, and David felt a surge of energy he hadn't experienced in years. The usual Monday morning dread was absent, replaced by a giddy anticipation that made his stomach flutter. The rumors had solidified. The email had arrived: "Mandatory all-hands meeting, 2 pm." He knew what it meant.

He sauntered into the break room, grabbing a stale donut and taking a massive bite. He winked at Maria from HR, who looked perpetually miserable. She just rolled her eyes, but David didn't care.

He imagined the look on his boss's face. The joy was intoxicating. He envisioned himself buying a motorcycle and leaving this place in a cloud of dust. He felt like a coiled spring, ready to launch.
