Gemotions

The office Christmas party was in full swing, but David couldn’t enjoy himself. He'd landed the promotion, and he felt a pang of guilt every time he saw Liam, his friend, in the periphery. Liam had worked just as hard.

He caught Liam's eye across the room. Liam forced a smile, but David could see the strain. He excused himself from his colleagues and approached Liam.

"Hey," he said, trying to sound casual. "This is a great party, huh?" Then, in a lower tone, he added, "Listen, I'm really sorry, Liam. I know how much you wanted this. But I promise, I'll do everything I can to make sure this new role benefits the whole team, you included." He clapped Liam on the shoulder, hoping to convey the sincerity he felt.
