He felt the butterflies in his stomach, a familiar nervousness returning. James adjusted his tie, feeling the smooth silk against his skin. He saw her near the bar: Sarah, his former partner. He hadn't seen her in ages. He felt no urge to hide or disappear. Quite the opposite, actually.

He approached, offering a casual wave. "Hey, Sarah," he said, keeping his tone light and easy. "Fancy seeing you here." She looked up, her expression shifting from surprise to something else he couldn't quite name.

"James," she replied, her voice steady. He noticed a slight tremor in her hand as she raised her glass. They fell into a comfortable, easy conversation, talking about the weather, the music, and the overflowing canapés. He found himself genuinely enjoying her company, a feeling he hadn't expected.
