Rain lashed against the windowpane as Daniel stared at the message on his phone. His heart sank, but it wasn't from sadness. It was more like a gentle ache, a feeling of let-down for the friends who had spent so long arranging it. He’d overheard the whispers and the frantic planning.

He sighed, the disappointment quickly giving way to a different sensation. He thought about the small, independent bakery that was going to provide the cake.
