The vibrant colors of the autumn leaves swirling in the wind couldn’t quite chase away the gloom emanating from David's neighbor, Mr. Harrison. He stood on his porch, staring at his yard with a vacant expression. David knew Mr. Harrison had recently lost his wife. He had seen the man out there, staring at the empty spaces in the yard.

David’s chest ached with a familiar sorrow. He recalled his own grief, how difficult it was to face the world after his own loss.

He decided to say something, finally. “Mr. Harrison? The leaves are getting thick. Do you need help with the yard work?” David asked, his voice gentle.

Mr. Harrison blinked, his gaze focusing on David. A flicker of something that resembled gratitude crossed his face. “That… that would be nice, David. Thank you.”

Together, they raked the leaves, the shared activity a silent acknowledgment of their shared humanity. David brought him a thermos of coffee, and they sat on the porch, sharing a quiet companionship.
