The sun beat down relentlessly, making even breathing feel like an exertion. David pushed himself off the sofa, a Herculean effort. His mission: the garage. He had to clear out some of his father's old things. The task felt like scaling a mountain.

He reached the garage door and hesitated. The thought of stepping inside the stifling, sun-baked space filled him with dread. He leaned against the door, drawing a long, weary breath. He finally pushed the door open and took a step inside.

A box of old files sat on a shelf. Inside, he found a typed letter, a draft of his father's resignation. The date was over three decades old. The letter spoke of creative stifling, of a yearning to pursue a different path. He felt a shared understanding. He let the letter fall back onto the shelf. The heat, the clutter, the sheer weight of everything… He retreated back to the relative cool of the house.
