The air was thick, heavy, suffocating. He moved through his days like a ghost, untouched by the world. His thoughts were a tangled mess, his emotions muted. He felt hollowed out, a shell of himself.

He entered the study, where Maria was sitting at her desk. She was typing furiously, a determined look on her face. He couldn't understand the sounds she was making.

She looked up, saw him standing there, and smiled. “Merhaba, canım,” she said, her voice filled with warmth. He felt a sudden chill, a sharp prick of awareness. He had no idea she was learning Turkish.
