The scent of gardenias filled the apartment, a fragrance that filled her with a sense of peace. She pictured a playful ferret, scampering around the living room, bringing a sense of fun and excitement to the space. She really felt the need for a connection, something alive, something to care for.

"No pets, Maya," her roommate, Liam, said, his voice flat. He was staring at his phone, looking stressed.

Maya took a deep breath. She started to clean the kitchen, humming softly to herself. She paused, then gently offered Liam a gardenia, its scent sweet and comforting. She knew she had to be patient, but she felt a strong pull towards getting a pet.
