He’d always heard his grandfather was a stoic, unyielding man. Leo, sifting through the family archive, felt a tingle of excitement. He ran his fingertips across the brittle edges of a photo, a faded snapshot of his grandfather, arms around a woman with flashing eyes. They were perched on the hood of a vintage car, beaming at the camera.

A chuckle escaped Leo's lips. He pictured his grandfather, whom he’d known only as a quiet, pipe-smoking figure. The man in the photograph was full of life, of youthful exuberance. Leo's chest swelled with a feeling he couldn't quite name.

He imagined the stories that this photograph held. He longed to know the details, the whispers behind the smiles. He decided to find out more. He would call his aunt.
